Today is Memorial Day here in the US, and it’s a day full of mixed emotions. On one hand, we are meant to remain somber, as Memorial Day is the day we take to commemorate the men and women who died while in military service for our country. On the other hand, Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer. Beaches and pools open up, we’re “allowed" to wear white, and students know that their summer break is just around the corner. So today's blog is really a mix of the two things for which we are very grateful.
First, I’d like to take a moment to thank all of those who are active military members or have family who are in the military. Your selfless service to our country is a gift without measure to families like mine. Secondly, I’d like to reach out a virtual hand and hug to all those who lost family members and friends in battle. Know that they died for the amazing and noteworthy cause of protecting their country and all of us. I hope that you are able to take some time with the ones you hold most dear. To me, Memorial Day holds a warm place in my heart and my memories. It reminds me of my father, Walter Ostrowski. My father served in World War II in Europe in some of the most hard-fought battles in Italy and North Africa. We were patriotic at home and always flew a small flag from the window of our apartment in the Bronx on Memorial Day. I was taught at an early age to revere the flag and to treat it with humble respect, a trait I’ve tried to instill in my own children.
Every Memorial Day my family and I decorate the house with red white and blue. We hang bunting like this from our porch. We bring out all the summer furniture to our patio and set up giant umbrellas and patriotic throw pillows. This year we might try a sunset bike ride with these fun wheel lights. Unfortunately, the start of summer can also remind me of bugs. My family and I start spending a lot more time outside and the consequences can be a scratchy mess. Over the years, I’ve learned the best essential oil blends that help protect us from those creepy critters and in light of summer being around the corner and bug season coming up, I thought I’d share a little glimpse into the “Bug-Be-Gone” LRP pack that I’ve put together!
1. We always roll Peppermint onto our chest, wrists, and ankles before heading outside.
2. We spray TerraShield onto our clothes and bodies, and on the chairs, tables, and patio.
Aside from those tips, you'll find in our LRP packs, I've also recently learned a trick to get rid of ants! Turns out, if you add Borax to a bit of honey and leave it out, the ants will be attracted to the sweetness and bring it back to their nest. But, Borax is toxic to ants, so it'll get rid of them!
